Protein Break-down:

Protein = % Soluble Protein + % ByPass Protein + %Other

Soluble Protein is the part of the protein that is digested early in the digestive system of dairy cattle--in the rumen.  By-Pass Protein, also called Rumen Undegradable Protein (RUP), is the part of the protein that is not digested in the rumen.  It "By-Passes" the first part of the digestive system to be digested later.  This Post-Rumen digestion of protein has been shown to increase milk production in dairy cattle:

Cows fed roasted soybeans produced 3.1 pounds per cow per day (lb/cow/day) more milk ...than cows fed raw soybeans… Cows fed roasted [and steeped] soybean diets produced about 10 lb/cow/day more milk than cows fed raw soybean or unheated soybean meal diets. (Randy Shaver, PhD, Feed Management, July/August 1999, Volume 50, Number 6, page 15)

The PDI (Protein Dispersibility Index) lab test is the only standardized test in industry.  In order to produce an acceptably higher percentage of ByPass Protein (RUP) the percentage of Soluble Protein must decrease to 9-11 PDI.  Soybeans must be in this range to be considered optimally-roasted.

For swine feed, the urease activity (pH unit rise) must be .02 or less to be optimally roasted.

TABLE 1 shows data for the Soluble Protein in raw soybeans vs. heat-processed soybeans that were immediately cooled vs. heat-processed soybeans that were steeped and cooled by the MRC Cooler Conditioner.  The MRC Steeping System is the key to a higher quality product and fuel savings!
